Minoxidil is used to treat hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). You may know it as the topical solution Rogaine®. The oral version is a once-daily tablet.

Oral minoxidil is an FDA-approved medication for high blood pressure. At the low doses prescribed for hair loss, it is used off-label. "Off-label" means a licensed clinician prescribes an FDA-approved medication for a use other than its original approval — a common and legal practice. Your care team will discuss whether low-dose oral use is right for you.

Appropriate for men and women. One small tablet a day, with or without food.

Minoxidil is believed to extend the growth phase of hair follicles and increase follicle size, which may support thicker hair over time. It's also thought to relax blood vessels, increasing blood flow to the scalp.

Oral dosing works across your entire scalp.

What to expect

Weeks 2–4: Shedding phase. Old hairs make room for new growth. This is normal — don't stop. It means it's working.

Months 2–3: Shedding eases. Follicles settle into their growth phase.

Ongoing: Stay consistent. Take one tablet daily. Results vary — talk to your care team about your progress.

Shedding typically begins 2–4 weeks after starting and lasts about 3–6 weeks. Based on published data for low-dose oral minoxidil for alopecia.

As with any medication, side effects are possible. Most people tolerate low-dose oral minoxidil well, but you should know what to watch for. Zanason offers unlimited messaging with your care team so you can ask questions any time.

The most commonly reported side effects include:

  • Unwanted hair growth on other parts of the body (such as the face or arms)
  • Fluid retention, including mild swelling of the hands, feet, or ankles
  • Headache
  • Lightheadedness or dizziness

Other side effects are possible — see full Important Safety Information.
