Finasteride is an oral medication used at the 1 mg dose to treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). It is the generic form of Propecia® and has been FDA-approved for hair loss in men for more than 25 years. Research shows finasteride prevented further hair loss in 83% of men who took it for 2 years, and 66% had some hair regrowth (Kaufman et al., 1998).
If prescribed, it's a simple routine: one pill a day, with or without food. That's it.
Finasteride lowers DHT levels in your scalp.
DHT is a hormone that shrinks hair follicles and causes hair loss in men. By reducing DHT, finasteride gives your follicles a chance to recover and keep producing hair.
It starts working right away, but you'll need to take it daily for 3–6 months before you notice less shedding. Best results usually show up around the one-year mark.

In clinical studies, sexual side effects were reported in about 1–2% of men. Other possible side effects:
