What is the Men's Hair Blend?

⚠ This medication is for men only and is not approved for women or children.

Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant must not handle crushed or broken finasteride tablets. Exposure may cause abnormalities of the external genitalia in a male fetus.

Minoxidil is toxic to cats and dogs — keep out of reach of pets.

The Men's Hair Blend is a compounded once-daily pill containing finasteride 1.2mg, minoxidil 2.5mg, vitamin E, and biotin.

Finasteride is a 5α-reductase inhibitor FDA-approved to treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men only. Oral minoxidil is FDA-approved for high blood pressure and is used off-label at low doses to support hair growth.

Boxed Warning — Minoxidil Tablets

Minoxidil tablets contain the powerful antihypertensive agent minoxidil, which may produce serious adverse effects. It can cause pericardial effusion, occasionally progressing to tamponade, and angina pectoris may be exacerbated.

In experimental animals, minoxidil caused several kinds of myocardial lesions as well as other adverse cardiac effects.

Note on hair-loss dosing: Low-dose oral minoxidil for hair loss is an off-label use, prescribed with provider oversight at significantly lower doses than those described in this Boxed Warning, which applies to minoxidil's FDA-approved use for severe hypertension.

Who should NOT take Men's Hair Blend?

Do NOT take Men's Hair Blend if any of the following apply:

  • Under 18
  • You are a woman, are pregnant, or may become pregnant. Women should not take finasteride or handle crushed or broken tablets. In animal studies, finasteride caused abnormal development of the genitals in male fetuses.
  • Allergy to finasteride, minoxidil, biotin, vitamin E, or any ingredient in this tablet
  • Pheochromocytoma
  • Taking blood thinners, antiplatelet drugs, or high-dose vitamin E supplements
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Liver disease
  • Prostate cancer or male breast cancer diagnosed within the last 5 years
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • History of stroke or mini-stroke (TIA)
  • Stage 3–5 chronic kidney disease
  • Currently using another product containing finasteride (Propecia®, Proscar®, dutasteride/Avodart®, Jalyn®)

What should I tell a licensed provider before starting?

Tell a licensed provider about all medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal or dietary supplements — especially blood pressure drugs, diuretics, or other vasodilators.

Share your full medical history. In particular, tell a licensed provider if you have a history of:

  • Prostate cancer, depression, or suicidal thoughts or behavior
  • Any heart condition, blood pressure condition, kidney disease, or fluid retention history

Withholding or providing inaccurate information about your health in order to obtain treatment may result in harm.

What are the most serious risks I should know about?

If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 or seek immediate medical attention.

  • Women and finasteride — risk to male fetus. Women who are or may become pregnant must not handle crushed or broken finasteride tablets. If a pregnant woman comes in contact with finasteride, wash the contact area right away with soap and water and consult a healthcare provider.
  • PSA / prostate cancer. Finasteride can decrease PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) levels by approximately 50%. PSA is a blood test used to screen for prostate cancer. Tell any doctor ordering a PSA test that you take finasteride. An increased risk of high-grade prostate cancer has been observed in men taking 5mg finasteride (higher than the 1.2mg in Men's Hair Blend).
  • Mood changes / depression / suicidal thoughts. There may be evidence of increased depressive symptoms, anxiety, and thoughts of suicide in users younger than age 45 taking finasteride for hair loss. If you experience new or worsening depression or suicidal thoughts, stop taking this medication and contact your care team or a mental health professional right away.
  • Fertility. Oral finasteride has been linked with a reduction in sperm count. This can last up to 6 months after stopping. Men with a history of fertility issues should discuss this with their care team before starting.
  • Minoxidil — blood pressure / heart / EKG. Minoxidil was originally developed as a blood pressure medication. At the low dose used for hair loss, blood pressure effects are usually minimal, but your care team will monitor this. Minoxidil may cause changes to your EKG — tell any doctor performing an EKG that you take oral minoxidil.
  • Vitamin E — bleeding risk. Vitamin E at 400 IU/day may increase bleeding risk, especially with blood thinners, antiplatelet drugs, or bleeding disorders. Watch for unusual bruising or bleeding.
  • Biotin — lab test interference. This tablet contains 10 mg of biotin. High doses of biotin (5 mg or higher) may interfere with certain lab tests, including troponin (heart attack tests), thyroid function tests, and hormone tests. Tell any doctor ordering lab work that you take biotin. You may need to stop 48–72 hours before blood tests. Ask your care team before stopping.

What are the most common side effects?

From finasteride — sexual side effects, reported in about 1–2% of men:

  • Lower sex drive
  • Erection problems
  • Less semen when you ejaculate

From oral minoxidil:

  • Unwanted hair growth on other parts of the body
  • Fluid retention, including mild swelling of the hands, feet, or ankles
  • Lightheadedness or dizziness
  • Headache

Self-monitoring tips: weigh yourself regularly — if you gain 5 or more pounds quickly, contact your care team. Count your resting pulse — if it increases by 20 beats per minute or more over your normal rate, contact your care team right away.

How should I take Men's Hair Blend?

  • Take one tablet by mouth once daily, at about the same time each day
  • You can take it with or without food
  • If you miss a dose, take the next one as usual — don't double up
  • Taking more than once a day will not make it work faster

How should I store Men's Hair Blend?

  • Store at room temperature 68°F–77°F (20°C–25°C)
  • Keep in a closed container, protect from moisture
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets — minoxidil is toxic to cats and dogs

Medication disposal

Dispose of unused medication at a drug take-back site: DEA Diversion Control — Drug Disposal.

If no take-back site is available: mix with dirt, cat litter, or used coffee grounds; seal in a plastic bag; throw away in household trash. Remove all personal information from the prescription label first.
